I’ve talked before about my feelings for the Hum Dono recolourization. Frankly, it’s cute, but not worth eliminating the original black-and-white stock. By converting the film from academy ratio to widescreen, you lose a great deal of the movie in exchange for some glitzy editing tricks (watch the colorized version here to see what I mean!). The film, its characters, the music, and the plot are so strong, it does not require any remodeling for wider accessibility. This song comes early in the movie, setting a high key tone for the upcoming embroilment.

It is a really beautiful song…I’ve been listening to it a lot lately….and it has been very charmingly picturised as well…. I’m with you on film recolourisations more generally….but watching the colourised video for this song, I’m quite impressed…It doesn’t always look natural but they’ve done a quite a good job here (just in terms of the colourisation, not making it widescreen etc)….It’s slightly off topic, but I really disliked the colourised version of Mughal-e-Azam……it wasn’t just a question of limitations in terms of the craft not having been perfected, and the end result looking artificial, but the choice of colours as well…sharp incongruous colours being dashed together, it seemed a case of ‘now that we’re colourising it, let’s put in as many colours as possible in the most unseemly combinations; doesn’t matter if it looks completely garish…it has to be clear to the audience that Mughal-e-Azam is now in colour!’ It wasn’t even consistent. In the original 1960 release, apart from the ‘Pyar kiya To darna kya’ song, the last 20 minutes or so are in colour, and Anarkali is attired spotless white….it’s meant to signify a shroud of sorts; she has willingly embraced death…In the colourised version, in the scene immediately preceding this (in which she is wearing the same outfit) they’ve coloured it grey…not only does it look plain bad, but the symbolism is kind of lost as well…I have been meaning to do an extended post on many aspects of Mughal- E-Azam, including it’s reclourisation, since forever, might actually get down to it this week….but, yeah, it seems that they’re getting significantly better at this recolourisation business.

Ah, among my all-time favorites ! And my dear hubby thinks this is The Best Romantic song ever ! The movie, itself, in its entirety, is a timeless classic. Even now, whenever we come across it on the tele, we can’t but stop to watch it.
I have a little suggestion, if I may? Instead of using the literal translation of ‘dil abhii bharaa nahin’ – heart is not yet “filled”, wouldn’t it sound better as –
my heart is not yet “sated”?
Or
my heart hasn’t had it’s fill ?

I did not watch the movie in black n white but when it was released in color I went alone to theater ( I have to do this many times because nobody wants to spend money on watching movies like this which they can get freely but I wanted to watch this movie in theater). I was probably the only person in his 20s in that theater , all others were old and when this song started I could not stop humming the tune…the buddhas and buddhis sitting beside me were also humming it. It was an memorable experience. Really loved the movie and songs were out of this world!!
